Drummer
Philly Joe Jones led a few sets for Galaxy during the 1977-78 period that featured veteran hard bop-oriented players. For this LP (not yet reissued on CD),
Jones is matched with trumpeter
Blue Mitchell, trombonist
Slide Hampton, the tenors of
Charles Bowen (who plays one song on soprano) and
Harold Land, pianist
Cedar Walton and bassist
Marc Johnson. "Midnite Waltz" is a change of pace, a trio feature for
Walton. Otherwise, the full group plays a pair of obscurities (including
Jones' "Trailways"), "Invitation" (always an excellent feature for
Land), and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." Fine music.
