Drummer Philly Joe Jones
led a few sets for Galaxy during the 1977-78 period that featured veteran hard bop-oriented players. For this LP (not yet reissued on CD), Jones
is matched with trumpeter Blue Mitchell
, trombonist Slide Hampton
, the tenors of Charles Bowen
(who plays one song on soprano) and Harold Land
, pianist Cedar Walton
and bassist Marc Johnson
. "Midnite Waltz" is a change of pace, a trio feature for Walton
. Otherwise, the full group plays a pair of obscurities (including Jones'
"Trailways"), "Invitation" (always an excellent feature for Land
), and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." Fine music.
