In the 1980s, the Cincinnati label Mopro recorded several valuable, swinging bop-oriented sessions, including this one. The talented Bobby Shew (heard on trumpet, flugelhorn and his own Shewhorn) performs seven standards with pianist Steve Schmidt, bassist Lynn Seaton and drummer John Von Ohlen. Highlights include "If I Should Lose You," "Straight No Chaser" and "I'll Close My Eyes." Shew's warm tone and creative ideas make this an LP worth searching for by straight-ahead jazz fans.
