This is a first-rate, single-CD collection on Paul Revere & the Raiders, and easily the best single-disc compilation ever issued on the band. That goes not only for the content, which ranges across their history and various stylistic phases, but also for the sound quality -- everything here has been remastered in high-resolution, 24-bit digital, and the results are mighty impressive in the listening department ("Ups and Downs," in particular, is a real treat in this format). The band's work never sounded better, and just to fill in a more complete picture of the group's work, the makers at Magic Records of France have appended Mark Lindsay's two early-'70s hit singles, "Arizona" and "Silver Bird," as well. The cover art, and the interior reproductions of the group's single and EP picture sleeves, are also pretty cool, and the only flaw here is the absence of any annotation, not that too many people choosing this European import won't already be conversant with most of the history behind this music. The U.S. double-CD set, The Legend of Paul Revere, is still the biggest and best of the collections on this band, but Anthologie 1964/1971 is a close second, with some virtues of its own.
