Album Review

Shudder to Think finally get to work with some good material on 1991's Funeral at the Movies, which allows them to realize some of the potential that the alternative rock underground had been whispering about for years. Unfortunately, this helpful material came in the form of a Jimi Hendrix cover. Guitarist/vocalist Craig Wedren whips "Crosstown Traffic" into indie rock shape courtesy of his trademark melodic treatment. Shifting vocal registers with abandon, Wedren also contorts "Red House" (a Shudder to Think original, not the blues number Hendrix performed) and the title track into curious alternative anthems. Outside of the three tracks mentioned above, not much else on Funeral at the Movies rises above Shudder to Think's early career standard that, while impressive, doesn't approach the artistry of Pony Express Record. But fans of the band should still find plenty to enjoy on this Dischord release.
