Marty Krystall (mostly on tenor and doubling on bass clarinet) and trumpeter Hugh Schick team up in Japan with Japanese bassist Yasushi Yoneki and drummer Takumi Lino. They perform a set of stirring post-bop that often swings hard yet is open to freer explorations. In addition to "Prelude to a Kiss" and two Thelonious Monk tunes, the quartet plays jazz adaptations of three Native American folk songs, plus Schick's "Karatose" and three songs by Krystall. The music is colorful, generally dynamic, and just unpredictable enough to always hold onto one's attention. Marty Krystall deserves to be much better-known. As is usually true on the CD releases from the M-A label, there is also a "bonus" track taken from an unrelated disc, in this case a version of "In a Sentimental Mood" performed by singer Sheila Jordan and bassist Harvie Swartz.
