Album Review

This budget CD reissue of Smiley Burnette's 1959 album Smiley Burnette and His Rodeo Songeree includes three previously unreleased recordings. Although originally conceived as an album for children, most of the songs are not children's songs per se, but novelty tunes with broad appeal, and some others are straight Western numbers. Befitting his silver screen image as a humorous cowboy sidekick, there is much comedy and lightheartedness in these songs, most of which were written by Smiley. Occasionally, as on the delightful "Deep Froggy Blues," Smiley makes use of the deep voice that inspired the name of his popular Frog Millhouse character.
