Last year, as the Doors released a 40th anniversary edition of its vaunted "L.A. Woman" album, keyboardist Ray Manzarek spoke about how the then-46 years since the group broke on through to rock'n'roll legend status have flown by.
"Time flies when you're living life," Manzarek told Billboard. "I don't know what it feels like, but it feels like no more than five years ago. Everything just goes whooshing by, like a runaway locomotive or something. And then here I am at (then) 72, thinking, 'Holy cow, how did that happen?'"
Manzarek's ride came to an end on May 20 when he passed away at RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, at the age of 74, following a long battle with bile duct cancer, which was kept largely secret. Dorothy Manzarek, his wife of 45 years, and brothers Rick and ...

WHAT THE @#$% IS THAT?! May 16, 2013 2:57 PM

One of the coolest moments from last month’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony was seeing Seattle legends Heart get their dues, at long last. After perennial members Ann and Nancy Wilson performed with the original lineup of the band (including bassists Steve Fossen, guitarist Roger Fisher, drummer Michael DeRosier and guitarist Howard Leese), the sisters were joined by a trifecta of Seattle’s next generation of rockers — Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell, Pearl Jam‘s Mike McCready and Alice In Chains‘ Jerry Cantrell — for a face-melting version of “Barracuda.” (Read more about Heart’s induction)
While Chris Cornell got the honor of doing the presentation speech for Heart, Cantrell would have been a great choice to get on the mic as well. He has history with the group: Ann ...

WHAT THE @#$% IS THAT?! Billy Corgan discusses discovering Black Sabbath, from ArtistDirect.com:
“I had an uncle who played drums. He had a fairly progressive record collection in the back of my grandparents’ house. He didn’t want me touching the stereo, but for some reason, my grandmother let me. He had a stack of albums. The first album on was Master of Reality. I was eight-years-old, and I put it on side A. I remember putting the needle down and hearing Tony Iommi coughing. It was “Sweet Leaf”. It was one of those rare moments in my life where time stopped and the sound of those guitars and his voice was the greatest thing I’d ever heard. I started listening to Black Sabbath religiously at the tender age of eight. It has a lot to do with the way I hear music. I still think ...

WHAT THE @#%^ IS THAT?! Imagine getting college credit for studying Metallica and Iron Maiden and playing metal gigs. Sounds like something metalheads might dream up after a long night of partying, but a college in the U.K. is doing just that. Beginning this fall, New College Nottingham will offer a two-year degree in heavy metal, reports the Nottingham Post.
Musician Liam Maloy designed the course, and says it will be academically rigorous. “In the past, heavy metal has not been taken seriously and is seen as lacking academic credibility when compared with genres such as jazz and classical music. But that’s just a cultural construction.”
The coursework will include the history of heavy metal, its relationship with religion and the role of metal music in video games. Practical skills will be taught as well, such as recording, music theory and on-stage performance. The second year will include ...

WHAT THE @#$% IS THAT?! JugeSTP, a longtime member of the BelowEmpty.com STP fan forums, posted the following on the BelowEmpty.com forums yesterday. Keep in mind, these are rumors, as Stone Temple Pilots haven’t officially announced the search for a permanent new lead singer to replace Scott Weiland. STP are scheduled to perform on May 30th in Los Angeles at the MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert, it is not know who will front them at that show but many are speculating that it could be Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington since the event is honoring him:
So first, it was confirmed: the boys “fired” Weiland and consider him done. They want to add someone famous to replace him as the singer of “Stone Temple Pilots” that will help sell the tours... Josh Homme was apparently a person they wanted ...
