    When are they going to start doing saliva testing? Urine can hold traces of THC for 6 weeks or more!
    I smoked one joint over christmas holidays and failed three weeks later! I was suspended, had to go for assessment at AADAC, and pass two tests before getting back to work! Now a minimum of 4 randoms within the next year, not to mention I will never get promoted now...
    Isn't the point of drug testing to make sure that the guys aren't impaired on the job?

      @jeff jackson I am currently going through the same thing.. it has been no fun.

    hey jeff... I would seriously fight that.. sounds like your rights as a canadian and a worker in canada have been broken... they have no right to test you like that!

    I think the biggest problem is that there are no regulations or industry standards on how to handle those who fail drug test for THC or any other drug.. they just have the limits set as to how much you can have in your system and after that its up to the company to penalize the employee as they see fit as long as they do not fire them... what they really need to do is to sit down and write a whole bunch of regulations (just like everything else) to set down guidelines that drilling and oil companies have to follow as a penalty to those who fail the tests.. and also have better tests for those who do use while not at work or near the job site... IMHO the tests and the system is totally half assed!!!

    Come on the oil companies are looking for any reason to see if a person is inpaired.. It comes from the Safety department .. now if any one would stand up and face the facts it is to make sure that you are not impaired at work.. Coke is out of your system in 24 hours THC 4 weeks .. booze 18 hours if your hammered and you could have a beer and be tested for booze and pass with no problems.. it is the Safety department that would have to be regulated.. a base line study should have been done years ago.. what about meth and all the other drugs out there? what is the limit and how long does it stay in your system who knows?

    There is nothing wrong with random drug testing. Bottom line. Weed is still illegal. Unless its for medical purposes. Nothing will change until they make weed legal. The purpose of random drug testing is to prove that an employee is impaired. It is no different then phoning in a suspected drunk driver. Due diligence plays a key part in the work force now. Doesnt matter whether its oil and gas, construction, whatever. A company has every right to random drug test if somebody is suspected to be under the influence of drugs and/or alchohol, he not only poses a threat to himself in the workplace but others working around him.

      @Chris I wouldn't even bother trying to get a green card - more trouble than it's worth. Also, you will most likely be denied unless you have serious medical issues (NOT anxiety, stress, etc...).

    I just got fired because I was ratted out by my assistant. I smoke at home but cant pass a drug test for weeks afterward. 23 years out the window. It's not worth it if you want to stay in the patch. And who could AFFORD to fight...even if you have a good case, industry will line up against you. Ever feel persecuted over nothing?

      @al Yep persecuted over nothing. Exactly same scenario.

    all that needs be done is ridicule and shame the companies that are opposed as being unsafe and promoting a culture of unsafe practice, if everyone knows that smoking a joint means 3 weeks of dirty piss, and everyone knows 24 hours and a coke head is clean... there is a very obvious large hole there that could be costing lives every year until the system is reformed, point this out as factor of industry negligence and reform will become mandated by the courts or the politicians that need to be seen as doing something, as marijuana is in fact not usable as medication for pain etc... the industry standard will have to move from a piss test to a saliva sample taken from the mouth, which is what is done in countries that think ahead about things ... no one wants someone impaired on the worksite, but what I did 3 weeks ago off-site? nobodies f'n business but my own.

      @JP ammeendment to previous :

      the line
      as marijuana is in fact not usable as medication for pain etc...

      should have been:
      as marijuana is, in fact, now usable as medication for pain etc...
