OILPATCH DRUG TESTS

Stores that sell drug detox kits in Alberta are expecting demand to increase following news of a pilot project that will randomly test workers. Suncor Energy, Canadian Natural Resources and Total E-and-P Canada are participating in a 2-year project that will randomly test workers for drugs and alcohol.

When are they going to start doing saliva testing? Urine can hold traces of THC for 6 weeks or more!
I smoked one joint over christmas holidays and failed three weeks later! I was suspended, had to go for assessment at AADAC, and pass two tests before getting back to work! Now a minimum of 4 randoms within the next year, not to mention I will never get promoted now...
Isn't the point of drug testing to make sure that the guys aren't impaired on the job?

hey jeff... I would seriously fight that.. sounds like your rights as a canadian and a worker in canada have been broken... they have no right to test you like that!

I think the biggest problem is that there are no regulations or industry standards on how to handle those who fail drug test for THC or any other drug.. they just have the limits set as to how much you can have in your system and after that its up to the company to penalize the employee as they see fit as long as they do not fire them... what they really need to do is to sit down and write a whole bunch of regulations (just like everything else) to set down guidelines that drilling and oil companies have to follow as a penalty to those who fail the tests.. and also have better tests for those who do use while not at work or near the job site... IMHO the tests and the system is totally half assed!!!

Come on the oil companies are looking for any reason to see if a person is inpaired.. It comes from the Safety department .. now if any one would stand up and face the facts it is to make sure that you are not impaired at work.. Coke is out of your system in 24 hours THC 4 weeks .. booze 18 hours if your hammered and you could have a beer and be tested for booze and pass with no problems.. it is the Safety department that would have to be regulated.. a base line study should have been done years ago.. what about meth and all the other drugs out there? what is the limit and how long does it stay in your system who knows?

There is nothing wrong with random drug testing. Bottom line. Weed is still illegal. Unless its for medical purposes. Nothing will change until they make weed legal. The purpose of random drug testing is to prove that an employee is impaired. It is no different then phoning in a suspected drunk driver. Due diligence plays a key part in the work force now. Doesnt matter whether its oil and gas, construction, whatever. A company has every right to random drug test if somebody is suspected to be under the influence of drugs and/or alchohol, he not only poses a threat to himself in the workplace but others working around him.
