Rock 101 question and answer: Thu June 28 [Soundgarden]
VERY COOL (video is below)…
Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell welcomed a fan to the stage in Newcastle, England earlier this week to help him perform an acoustic version of the band's classic "Outshined." According to Loudwire, Cornell, who's on a solo tour through Europe, invited Ben Dawson onstage and asked him to perform the song on guitar with him. Dawson later told Grunge Report that the five-minute jam was the "most awesome moment of my life!"
"Outshined" isn't the first song you would think of for an acoustic version, and Cornell told us that a number of Soundgarden tunes don't always work in that environment: ["As a rule, the more a song is riff-based, the less it really translates. Just a single note riff played on an acoustic guitar and someone singing over it sounds like Def Leppard unplugged to me -- like, it's just not good. It might be that you're playing someone's favorite song and you'll get a good audience reaction from it, but it's not good."]
Soundgarden is in the final stages of prepping its first album in 16 years for release. The band completed recording earlier this year and is now mastering the set for an October release.
The group's first new song in 16 years, "Live To Rise," recently topped the Active Rock radio chart and is still in the Top 10. The track is taken from Avengers Assemble, the companion soundtrack to the blockbuster movie The Avengers.
