Rock 101 question and answer: Tue Sept 18 [Soundgarden]
Soundgarden has firmed up new album details…
Soundgarden has made it official: the band's first album in 16 years, titled King Animal, will arrive on November 13th, with a first single called "Been Away Too Long" hitting radio and digital retailers by September 27th. The track list and cover artwork have also been revealed. The Seattle quartet's sixth studio album and first since 1996's Down On The Upside will feature 13 songs. Drummer Matt Cameron told us that while some of the material has been around for a while, most of it was written for this record: ["I would say about, like, 90 percent of it is brand new, but there's a few ideas that we never really got to when we were making Down On The Upside. So we've tried to update some super-old stuff, but it's not, it doesn't sound too old and dusty and crusty."]
The band members have described the album as "weird" and "diverse," with singer Chris Cornell telling Billboard recently, "I don't really know how to describe it musically, because typically with Soundgarden... every time we write a song we always take it for what it is and try to make it the most it can be."
Soundgarden reunited in 2010 after a 13-year break, releasing a retrospective collection called Telephantasm and a concert album titled Live On I-5.
The band's first new song since regrouping, "Live To Rise," was a rock radio hit in June when it was issued as the lead single from the soundtrack of the movie The Avengers.
Soundgarden has yet to announce tour plans in support of King Animal.
The complete track list for King Animal is "Been Away Too Long," "Non-State Actor," "By Crooked Steps," "A Thousand Days Before," "Blood On The Valley Floor," "Bones Of Birds," "Taree," "Attrition," "Black Saturday," "Halfway There," "Worse Dreams," "Eyelid's Mouth" and "Rowing."
